The Big Freeze

On 24 January 1963, the people of Walton woke to an incredible sight — the sea had frozen.

Ice floes extended as far as the end of Walton Pier, and the lifeboat was out of action for the entire day.

These remarkable photographs were taken by 17-year-old Peter Frost and his colleague at Putmans Photographers, David West.
